Elbow deep in gorilla moat muck

TL;DR Crews from our wastewater and zoo get together twice a year to clean out the moats in the gorilla exhibit. It's fast work now -- compared to what it was -- but shows what can happen when two departments work together. Also, it was just kind of fun to be in an exhibit at the zoo.

Coping with irate customers at Topeka's Call Center

TL;DR 368-3111 serves as Topeka's A to Z service line - you can basically call about anything, and the call center will do their best to help you. But most of the calls relate to water service, including payments and, sometimes, shut offs. Those lead to some pretty terrible experiences, but our call center reps are well-versed in handling irate customers.

Parking Control Officers don't have it that bad in Topeka

TL;DR Topeka isn't as crazy as you might have seen on Parking Wars (yes, our staff has seen the show). There are times when violators get angry, but letting them vent and explaining the ordinances usually does the trick. Parking control is more about making room for everyone than writing tickets. If you have questions about parking, hit up 785-368-3916 or the website.

Topeka's water quality put to the test

TL;DR Topeka has an extensive water treatment process that takes a full day from river to tap. And because it's on everyone's mind: None of our water mains are made of lead -- only lead in the City is found in service lines and interior plumbing of older homes, and they've never been above EPA regs. Also, the Kansas River has hard water, so very little corrosion (you can think those white rings around your faucets for that).

Finance goes to school

TL;DR Topeka's finance team volunteers at a local school every Thursday. This week, a kid asked to get on Snap Chat, and another told Trump she hopes he doesn't become president. What is happening.

Sign making process is an eye opening process

TL;DR Topeka has a sign making and street painting division and their job is sweet. If you notice a sign that needs replaced, call 368-3111. Sped up videos rule and, yes, I'm done with the Ace of Base references.

Demolishing homes throughout Topeka

TL;DR The City Council approved $400,000 in demolitions funds this year, and we're using every penny. This blog will be updated with footage from each demolition and background information as they happen. So stay tuned!
